Huawei P40 Pro includes American parts despite the blacklist

Huawei continues to use components made by American companies in its latest flagship smartphones (Huawei P40 Pro) although the United States has listed the Chinese telecom equipment manufacturer in the business blacklist called entity list, according to a report by the Financial Times.

Huawei launched several days ago the series (Huawei P40), which is the latest selection of the company's leading smartphones after Washington's application of sanctions last May, which prevented American companies from dealing with Huawei unless they obtained a license to do so.

In the wake of the sanctions, Huawei, which the Trump administration accuses of spying for Beijing, has been forced to find ways to replace American components, as it can no longer purchase American products.

The Financial Times dismantled this year’s Huawei P40 Pro phone and last year’s Huawei P30 phone, released before the U.S. sanctions, for comparison, and the dismantling process was done by XYZone, a Shenzhen-based company that breaks down smartphones and identifies component suppliers.

Phone makers sometimes use different components in different batches of the same smartphone, and the report showed that there are some parts of American companies in the latest smartphone from Huawei, although the United States prevented all of its companies from selling to the Chinese technology company.

The front-end units of the radio frequency for the phone (Huawei P40 Pro) were produced by three American chip companies, Qualcomm, (Skyworks) and (Qorvo), and the front-end units of the radio frequencies are important parts of the phone that are connected to the antennas and are required to make calls and connect to the Internet.

Dan Wang, technology analyst at research firm Gavekal Dragonomics, said: “Huawei has demonstrated flexibility by replacing many American components over the course of the phone's own design cycle, but continuing to use it for Qorvo chipsets and Skyworks shows that it is extremely difficult to break the reliability On American technology. ”

Wang explained that the front-end units of radio frequencies are a form of analog chips, a sector that the United States still controls, and added: “As the United States discusses tightening sanctions on Huawei, the flexibility of the company will be tested more rigorously in the next year.” .

The front-end units of the radio frequency of last year phone (Huawei P30) come from Qualcomm, (Skyworks) and (Qorvo) as well, whose share prices have fallen due to news of the US sanctions against Huawei.

The list of entities means that US companies must apply for a license to export any U.S.-origin technologies to Huawei, and the U.S. government has granted a temporary public license to their companies, allowing them to sell to Huawei in order to assist customers such as telecom companies that may need to replace parts of their wireless devices .

But the temporary general license does not include sales for the purpose of making new products, such as the smartphone (Huawei P40 Pro), so companies must seek individual licenses, and the US Department of Commerce did not mention which company was granted the necessary license.

A Huawei spokesperson said that the company always adheres to any export control regulations in various countries, including the United States, and that all product materials are legally obtained by Huawei from global partners, and we insist on working with our partners to provide consumers with quality products.

Other notable changes include the disappearance of the American chip maker Micron from Huawei P40 Pro.

Micron manufactured flash memory chips (NAND) for some phone batches last year (Huawei P30), and the South Korean company Samsung made the same chips for other batches, and it appears that the phone this year (Huawei P40 Pro) contains flash memory cards (NAND) from Samsung only.
